How to Use Smart Alerts

Admin 2.0 Policies can be very effective at blocking pornographic content by blocking individual sites or selecting entire categories of sites to be blocked. But new sites are created every day, which makes it a challenge to keep a block list up-to-date. Smart Alerts uses context aware, machine-learning technology to identify pornographic content that was not otherwise blocked by conventional URL list-based filtering. Smart Alerts can also be used to identify potential self-harm incidents before they happen.

Types of Alerts

There are two categories of Alerts, Pornography and Self Harm. The Pornography category is enabled by default and cannot be disabled. The Self-Harm category not enabled by default, but can be enabled in the Smart Alerts Preferences section.

How Alerts are Generated

Alerts are generated when a student visits a webpage that contains pornographic content that wasn't blocked by Policy filtering. Smart Alerts uses machine-learning technology to make predictions about the content on the page. If the prediction meets a certain confidence level, an alert is generated in the Timeline. For more information about Alerts, please see Detailed Report Overview.

Responding to Alerts Using Triggers

Triggers can be configured automatically respond to pornographic or self-harm related content. Triggers can be configured respond to content with a customized message, notify an administrator, and/or block the content entirely. By default, Smart Alerts has no triggers preconfigured. Triggers can be managed by navigating to smart-alerts.goguardian.com/triggers or by clicking the Triggers tab. For more information about creating triggers, please see How to Create a Trigger.
