Creating a New Settings Profile

GoGuardian allows you to create different filtering policies based on your Google Organizational Unit (OU) structure.  For instance, you could block for your students while leaving this site open to your teachers.  This article will outline the steps needed to create and use Settings Profiles.  Note: Creating and applying custom settings profiles first requires that you import your OU structure. See Importing OUs for more information.

Let's begin with the Default profile.  This is the base profile for your organization.  It is applied to All Users and OUs in your organization.  Any changes that you make to your blacklist categories, custom blacklist/whitelist, or youtube filter blacklist/whitelist will apply to everyone in your organization when these changes are made for the Default profile.  When you create a new profile and apply it to a specific OU, the settings you change for that profile will apply on top of the default profile. 

To get started with Custom Settings Profiles, go to Settings > Organizational Units

1) Select the OU that you would like to apply new filter settings to from the OU tree on the left.  For example, I have selected the Support Troubleshooting OU below.

2) Then select Create Profile on the right.  This will create a new profile and apply it to the OU that you have selected.  It will copy and inherit any settings, blacklists, and whitelists you have created at the Default level.  You will see in the Blue Box that it says 0 for unique sites, categories, etc.  These numbers will change as you add settings to this profile which are unique from the Default profile.  Below I show the steps for creating the "Support Testing" profile.  

The Default profile and any profiles applied to Parent OUs of the OU you are changing will inherit to this profile.  When you make changes to this profiles blacklists or whitelist you will see these changes as "Unique".  You may also change privacy settings such as Chromebooks Only, IP Range, Time Range, and Force SafeSearch for just this OU by navigating to Settings > Settings and changing them there.  

3) Now that you have created a profile and applied it to the OU you want.  You can add a site to the blacklist or whitelist for just this OU.  First, make sure you are editing the correct OU.  Select the OU from the dropdown menu at the top and make sure that the profile you created is applied.  It should look like this.  

4) If you then go to the Whitelist/Blacklist tab you can add to the blacklist or whitelist for this profile.  You will see any sites that have been added to the Default profile listed here and you cannot change these as they are applied to All Users.  But you can add.  For instance, I will add to the blacklist for this profile.,,, and were inherited from the Default profile. has been added just for the Support Testing profile and therefore only applies to the Support Troubleshooting OU.  And you can see on the Organizational Units page, that I now have 1 unique blacklisted site.

7) You can add this profile to multiple OUs if you want!  It is as easy as selecting the OU from the tree on the left and then using the dropdown in the blue box to select which profile you want to apply!
