Filtering YouTube on your Chromebooks

YouTube is full of engaging and educational content perfect for teaching, but there is also a lot of distracting or inappropriate content available.  With the GoGuardian YouTube Filter, you now have several ways to filter or block YouTube content quickly and easily for your school or district.

Go to Whitelist/Blacklist > YouTube.  Enable the Youtube Filter and begin filtering videos across the Internet including YouTube videos embedded in other sites.

Force Age Restriction: Enable the Age Restriction setting to only allow age-appropriate content to be viewable while your users watch YouTube videos.  Videos that are not age-appropriate will be blocked.

Filter by Category: Every video on YouTube belongs to one of the categories shown in this sub-section.  Checkmark any of the categories from Animals to Travel to block these types of videos from being seen.  To block all YouTube videos except the ones you choose, checkmark the setting Block all videos except whitelisted.  Checking this box will ensure that only the videos you add to the whitelist will be able to be seen.

Channel Filtering: Blacklist or Whitelist YouTube channels by copy-pasting a YouTube channel URL into the box and pressing the blue “Add” button.  Please ensure you are adding a Channel URL by making sure the URL has the word “channel” in it.  For example, NBC’s channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCccjdJEay2hpb5scz61zY6Q

  • Hovering over the channel that you added will show a blue info circle.  Hovering over this circle will display more information about the channel, and will also allow you to click on it, opening a new tab to the channel’s YouTube page.
  • Hovering over the channel that you added will show a red trash can which will allow you to remove that channel from the list when clicked.
